GI Blues Song Chapter 12
Posted on | October 19, 2005 |
Daylene sees Jason and his friend sitting at his usual table in the front. Paul looks like Jason with the muscular build and shaved head. Must be a friend from the reserves she thinks to herself. At her break she goes over to the table. Both of the men stand up. Paul extends his hand and she takes it.
“Day, this is my good friend, Paul. This is the girl I’m marrying.”
“Nice to meet ya. Old Jason told me a lot about yo,” Paul says.
“Same here,” she replies.
They sit down and paul orders them all beers. She pulls out a cigarette and lights up. The beer comes to the table and Paul makes a toast, “To my best friend and his future wife. Cheers.”
“Cheers,” Daylene and Jason say together.
” I can’t wait until we to go Iraq,” Paul says, ” I’m ready to get them terrorists.”
Jason shoots Paul an icy look, “Yeah we don’t know if we’ll be called up for duty. We probably won’t be.”
“That’s bull shit, Jason and you know it. They already called some units from Mississippi and Alabama. It’s just a matter of time.”
Daylene thinks again about Jason and his intentions. This already crossed her mind earlier today while watching the news. She puts out her cigarette and looks at Jason. He seems to be getting a little pissed at Paul.
“What da ya think, Daylene?” Paul asks her.
“About what?”
“You know the war.”
“Uhh, I don’t know. I don’t really follow too much on that stuff. I mean we should get the bad guys who did crashed those planes into those buildings and all.”
“See, Jason she is a supporter of the war effort.”
“Well, I got to go back. So Paul it was nice to meet you. Will you be here when I am done my second set?” Daylene says.
“Probably not, the old lady will give me hell if I come in too late. You’ll meet her Sunday. Jason and you are coming over to my place for a barbeque. So, I’ll see you then.”
“Okay then. Looking forward to it. Nice meeting ya.” He shakes her hand again and kisses her on the cheek.
She has a hard time concentrating on her songs. She looks at Jason and he smiles and mouths I love you. She forgets why she was worried. She loves him and he loves her. She was pissed that he said she would go to Paul’s house but who cares? These are his friends and she finds it endearing that he wants her to meet his friends. Because that’s what lovers do. She has been waiting for a love like this. Many of her other men, she never met anybody that was either his friend or family. She only saw them alone and the night would end up in his bed. So, this is true love.
She finishes her show and embraces Jason and kisses him hard ont he mouth.
“Don’t pay no attention to Paul.We probably won’t go. He never was like this. All of a sudden he is trigger happy.”
“It don’t matter, Jase. I love you no matter what.”
“I hope you ain’t mad that I spoke for you. Saying you’ll go to the barbeque. You might like Jess. She is really nice and always been good to me.”
“I’m not mad. Thanks for taking me.” Daylene says.
“Why wouldn’t I. You ain’t a girl just to have sex with, your my lady.”
