Jason wakes Daylene with a kiss on Sunday morning.
“Mornin, beautiful.”
“Mornin. What time do we have to be at Paul’s?” Daylene asks.
“Sometime around noon. They go to church.”
Later that day, Jason and Daylene drive out in the bayou. Paul and Jess live in a little blue house with a chainlink fence around the yard. Two kids, a boy and a girl, run around the yard. They get out of the car and ht ekids hug Jason. A pregnant woman comes to the door and hollers for the children to go in the house.
“Hi ya, you must be Daylene and I am Jess. Why doncha ya’ll come in. Don’t mind the kids they’re a little rowdy.” Daylene shakes Jess’s hand.
“Paul is out back ya’ll can go on back.”
Jason leads her to the back yard. Paul is standing in front of the grill and waves quickly before tending his fire. Jess brings out a pitcher of tea and the kids follow her and run out in the yard. Jason grabs a beer from the cooler and stands next to Paul. Daylene and Jess sit at the table. They don’t say anything, just sit there and stare outat the children.
“Well I’ve known Jason for a few years now and I can’t believe he’s gettin married.”
“Sometimes, I think that we’re movin too quick. But I know this is right.”
“You wanna know what I think? No offence to you or anything. I think he is scared you know they might go to war. He always wanted a family. I think he’s afraid to die. “
“He hasn’t been called yet.” Daylene says.
“No, you right they ain’t been called but the chances are pretty good.” she replies.
The sit in silence again. Daylene feels uncomfortable from what Jess said. Jess must not like her for her to say that. How could Jess say that?
“Look, I’m sorry Daylene. I just want you to know the reality of what is going on. Look he has had other women before you. And the thought of war still loomed around him then. So it’s gotta be true love. He did pick you to be his wife, right. So we friends?”
“Yeah, okay friends. I thought about the same things. But you know something true in your heart you just know it is true? That is what I feel with Jason. Things are right with him. Everything is right.”
“I feel the same way about Paul. I don’t want him to go. I love him too much. But if he does he does, nothin I can do about it.”
Paul and Jason come over with the burgers and hotdogs. Paul calls the kids to sit down. Jason sits next to Day and grabs her hand under the table. Then squeezes it. They glance at each other. She just wants to take him home and make love to him for the rest of the day and night and for the rest of their lives. He mouths “I love you” and she does the same. He kisses her on the cheek and kids scream ewww and everyone laughs.
