GI Blues Song Chapter 14
Posted on | November 2, 2005 |
Daylene sits quietly in the car and Jason notices her distance from him since they left Paul’s home.
“What’s wrong, Day. You’ve been quiet since dinner.”
“Nothin really. Just thinkin.”
“Whatca ya thinkin about? You can tell me. We are getting married soon.”
She turns and looks at him, “That’s what I’m thinkin about. Us gettin married. Doncha ya think it’s too fast?”
He sits there and then pulls off the road at a picnic area. Jason turns off the car, “Why are you gettin cold feet already. We didn’t even pick the date yet.”
“Jason, ” she snaps, “Are you marryin me cause you might be goin to war and your afraid to die. Tell me the truth.” She lights a cigarette and he takes one from her pack and she lights it.
“Okay last year when 9/11 happened I knew that might go overseas and I got scared. I didn’t wanna die with out a family but Paul told me I was better off just to have my mom. You know he’s got a wife 2 kids and one the way and if he goes to war and dies, his wife is a widow and his kids grow up without him or with a step-father. That made sense, you know. So I still dated but just for the company of a woman. My relationships didn’t last long ,maybe a month, maybe less. I dunno. I guess they sensed that there was no future with me and they would end it.” Jason explains to her.
“Okay, Jason what about me? We’ve known each other for a few weeks. What makes me different? How do I know that I’ve got a future with ya?”
“You know, when I saw you at the club and then you sang my song, there was something special about you. I couldn’t put my finger on it. I still can’t. I wanted to take you home the first night and have sex like I did with the others. But I wanted to wait. I felt something so strong about you. I didn’t need to have sex with you right away. I don’t know why I love you, Daylene but I do. Maybe because you are my future. I don’t know how long our future is but it is our future no matter how long or short.” He grabs her hands and kisses them. She has tears in her eyes and he wipes them away with his fingertips.
She hugs him. Jason kisses her neck. And in the steamy Mississippi night, they made love in his car. Afterwards, the both light a smoke. He grabs her hand and starts the car.
“Jason, you wanna get married in 2 weeks, November 15?” Daylene asks him.
“You know I do.”
