Daylene sits in the master bedroom, waiting for the time to come. Jess, her matron of honor comes in.
“Hey there, Day. You look beautiful. Not too much longer you’ll be Missus Mulrooney. I wanted to say thanks for asking me to be your witness. Ya know ya didn’t have to.”
“Well. Jess I was thinkin that since you let us use your house, I could thank ya by askin ya to witness,” Daylene says.
“Are you nervous?” Jess asks.
“Yeah a little bit.”
Someone knocks at the door, it is an older woman. “Hello, I am Jason’s mom. I would have been here sooner but I could’t leave until early this morning.” She hugs Daylene. “My name is Sandy but you can call me mom if you like just don’t call me Mrs. Mulrooney.”
Daylene hugs back,” I wish we could have met sooner.”
“Well I’ll be here for a couple of days till Friday. So we’ll have plenty of time. I have something for you. You need something borrowed.” Sandy pulls out a silver necklace with a tear drop pearl hanging from it. Daylene sits down and Sandy stands behind her and puts it on, “This was Jason’s nanna’s. Well it is that time I’ll see you out there.”
They all leave the bedroom and Daylene hears the music start up. Jess sends her kids out first. The flower girl and ring bearer walk down the steps into the back yard. Then Jess walks. The band plays a jazzed up version of “Here Comes the Bride” and Daylene walks slowly to Jason. Her heart beats fast as she approaches him. He flashes her a smile. He grabs her hand and walks with her to the pastor.
The pastor starts the sermon. They say a prayer and then move onto the vows. Daylene slides the wedding ring on Jason’s finger and does the same.
“I now pronounce you man and wife. You may kiss the bride,” the pastor says. Jason lifts her veil and kisses her hard and deep. The small audience erupts in applause and hollering. “May I be the first to announce Mr. and Mrs. Jason Lee Mulrooney.”
The band plays their song, “At Last” their friends and family cheer.
He takes her in his arms, “Daylene, I love you.”
“This is the best day of my life. I will always love you Jason.”
