Christmas
It is that time of year again, the snow is falling, people filling the stores and spending tons of money, ribbons and wrapping paper, holiday parties, and family togetherness. The people are nicer, unless you are in retail. It is Christmas time. This is the best time of the year regardless of what holiday you celebrate.
For the Christians, this is Jesus’ birthday, the birth of the Messiah. Although some scholars believe Jesus could have born in April or October. We don’t really know things get lost in translation or lost in time. There are some scholars who thinks that December 25 was chosen to convert the pagans to Christianity. If you don’t know today is Yule and it falls on the Winter Solstice, 4 days before the supposed birth of Christ.
Many traditions of Christmas has pagan roots such as the Christmas Tree, Santa Claus and decorating the home. There is much debate nowadays about saying Merry Christmas because of the religious conotations. Is Christmas really about Christ anymore? Maybe for some people it is but for the majority it is about the traditions of gift giving and trimming the home and togetherness. That is what a holiday really should be about anyway.
I believe that Jesus Christ is a real person other historical evidence supports that fact. Since there is so much about Christmas that has nothing to do with Jesus Christ, what does saying Merry Christmas really mean? To me it means Happy December 25. So I will continue to say it and I am not offended when I hear it.
Christmas is different now than it was in the early days of Christmas. To me, Christmas means all that above. And for whatever reason the tradition was made and will continue this way. It is nice to look forward to something at the end of the year, when winter is on our doorsteps and it is so bleak and cold.
Merry Christmas Happy Holidays
