The Red River Dam Killer

Posted on | September 7, 2007 |

Awakening in the park, cold from dew, Lorelai wondered how she got there. She rose to her feet and smoothed out her clothes. Her throat ached as she gulped. The rumbling of the Red River Dam engulfed her senses.

Must’ve been some party, she pondered. Lorelai knew she met a man. She always followed the rules: don’t take a strange man to her house, never go to his. Plus, Lorelai enjoyed the feeling of a teenager messing around in a park. It made her feel young.

She staggered to the parking lot and not a car there. Bummer she thought too much to drink and I can’t remember the man. Lorelai didn’t live far from the park so she walked. When she arrived home, she took some cold medicine and went to sleep.

She woke in the afternoon, not uncommon for her, especially after a night of celebrations. Her latest book made the best seller’s list, a reason for and her friends to party. Of course, they didn’t need a reason to party.
Lorelai’s obsession to be successful cost her marriage. Dan and she married fresh out of college. In the beginning, things were great but Lorelai started working more not only at the paper but on her books. When she published her first novel, the marriage strained. Until one day, Dan had enough and left because of Lorelai. Not sad from her divorce, she had Macy and Sue, also divorcees.

Lorelai took more cold medicine and checked her messages. Sue called. She dialed her number. Sue answered; her voice hoarse and sad. Lorelai heard Sue but no matter how hard Lorelai talked Sue couldn’t hear her and she hung up. Lorelai tossed the phone against the wall.

Deciding on sending Sue an email, she woke the computer. Lorelai remember the man somewhat. A tall, blonde hair, sexy blue-eyed, and oh so handsome man bought her drinks after her friends left. She wished she could remember his name. Flipping on the monitor, her current novel appeared.

This wasn’t her regular mystery novel; this was a true crime novel of the Red River Dam Killer. This obsession sealed the divorce. For the last ten years, women turned up dead at the Red River Dam, throats slashed and a trophy taken from each woman, a piece of jewelry ,a purse, or something else.

Lorelai took an immediate interest in the crime because it happened in her town. Lucky for her, one of her dear friends and help on her books worked the case and allowed all sorts of exclusives; like going to the crime scene and taking photos.

An FBI profiler said the killer was probably good looking, well spoken, and appeared trustworthy. The victims shared no similar qualities except the women were alone, needy and lonely. Her preformed no sexual assault but only killed for the thrill.

Lorelai remembered what he drove and his name, Jay Parker. She considered looking him through the DMV. Someone opened the door, Abrey Delay, her friend from the force, entered with some uniforms. What was going on? she thought. Lorelai ran to him- nothing.

“Come on guys, there’s nothing here.” He noticed the computer; a tear fell from his he shut off the monitor. “God, I loved you, Lorelai,” he mumbled and they all left.

Lorelai turned the monitor back on and checked the local paper. The headline glared at her, “Local Author, Lorelai McThiernny, Murdered by the Red River Dam Killer.” The images of the night flooded her.

They met after Sue and Macy went home. Lorelai welcomed the advances of the dashing man. He bought her drink after drink. He flirted. She needed him. He said she was beautiful. He invited her for a drive. She said yes. He drove to the dam, she never thought twice. They walked hand in hand. He kissed her. Then got behind her, grabbed her dark red hair, she felt the blade across her throat. Lorelai collapsed to the grass. He looked into her eyes.

How can he that? Lorelai fumed He didn’t care about anyone. How could he do it to anyone? No one deserved this. She could stop him, but how? Lorelai looked down her Celtic trinity necklace, gone.

Abrey only needed enough for a search warrant. She knew what she had to do. Lorelai walked to the bar and grabbed a napkin. She scribbled Jay Parker’s name and his blue Mercedes. Lorelai went to the morgue.
Seeing her naked body on the table, made her death feel more real. The coroner stitched her throat. Lorelai headed over to the police station. She easily found her clothes still folded in a paper bag. Nobody in lab gave her the opportunity to slip the napkin in her jean pocket. She knew they would find it.

The very thing that took her marriage was the very thing that took her life. But in the end she took his life as well.

The twist to me was that she was able to affect the real world while dead. The fact she was dead didn’t surprise me as soon as I knew the killer killed by slitting throats.

What’s/Who’s Abrey?

I knew she was dead the time when her friend with the cops came over, and her friend didn’t even saw her. So, I thought she’s the one being killed! This is a nice story! I would love to read the rest of your stories…Keep up the good work!
