Reaffirmation in Belize

Trina boarded the plane to Belize. Just a few short hours ago, she decided she need to get away from her job, her nasty divorce and everything else. After deciding to go to Belize, she booked a hut at the Chaa Creek Resort because it was near the Macal River and at the foothills of the Maya Mountains. Remembering back to her honeymoon as the plane climbed, she and Jake did have an adventure vacation all through South America. Of course, at the time when their marriage was fresh, she though they’d last forever.

Soon, the fresh jungle air and scents of exotic flowers greeted Trina. With her first deep inhale of the untamed beauty cleared so much of her body and mind. Trina slept for the first time since the beginning of the divorce.

The following morning, Trina had coffee on the verandah of the restaurant when she saw a tall, blonde haired man. Jake she thought No it couldn’t be he was back in New York. Finishing her coffee, Trina hurried to meet a group going bird-watching and hike. She missed Jake, she rationalized. She did love him and always would. Trina couldn’t remember the real reason why they were divorcing, the blanket of all excuses, irreconcilable differences. It was everything that avalanched out of control.

The guide noticed the tears and asked if everything was okay. She nodded. Someone tapped her on the shoulder, “Trina.”

She whirled around and came face to face with Jake. “Jake, what are you doing here?”

“I was going to ask you the same thing.”

“Needed to get away,” she replied.

“Me too.”

The hike started. The jungle was hot and the bugs bit. The cacophony of monkies and birds enlivened the senses. Sunlight glinted just right through the dense trees, illuminating a spider web. Jake gently grabbed her arm and the fell away from the group, “Trina how did it get so bad so fast?”

“I don’t know, Jake.”

Parrots flew overhead. “We should’ve done this sooner,” he said.

“Done what?”

“Come back here together, to Belize where our life started together. I didn’t know you were here. I decided on a whim.”

Trina looked in his eyes and hugged him, “I’m glad you came.”

They continued walking; they didn’t talk of their issues. Happenstance brought them back to their honeymoon and each remembered why they loved each other. Jake and Trina spent the night together and he asked her to renew their wedding vows.

The following morning, a priest joined them as they went to the Mayan temple. Reaffirming the vows, the looked at each other with renewed affection and kissed as the rain fell around them.
