Firefly Chapter 2

Posted on | January 20, 2008 |

Ray and Carrie passed their driver’s exam after the third try. They just didn’t work together well enough. They each got their own licence.

“I look freaking gross,” Ray said about her picture.

Carrie looked over, “I think you look okay.”

“Well Carrie, you always look good.”

Beth gave the girls a hug, “where do you want to go and celebrate?”

“Bennigans,” Ray suggested.

“Dairy Queen,” Carrie added.

“Okay, we’ll do both,” Beth said.

Later that night, Ray gazed upon herself, “god damn Carrie, we are getting fat.”

“What are you talking about? I think we look great.”

“Maybe Carrie, if you didn’t eat so much ice cream we wouldn’t be so fat.”

“Whatever Theresa.”

Ray hated the way she looked. Sometimes she hated sharing her body with Carrie because they had to agree on everything. Of course, Ray had the right side of the body and while Carrie kept her long wavy, blonde hair; Ray chopped hers short and dyed it black. She pierced her ear all the way up. Ray put on her headphones to watch TV so didn’t bother Carrie. She wondered if she could convince Carrie to go on a diet.

Looking over at Carrie’s notebook, where Carrie doodled “I love Nick” with a heart around it. Ugh I hope it is not Nick LaTroph thought Ray. He is a repulsive sheep.

Carrie had the job and Ray tagged along. Carrie was kind and spilt her money in half. Carrie knew she carried her sister but Ray w as her own person. So what if she went for the Goth. look? Carrie wiped off the counters as Ray listened to music when they came in, they being Michelle and Nick.

Carrie and Michelle became friends back in elementary school. They each shared the same passion for school and both wanted to be some kind of doctor. Unfortunately, Michelle and Ray didn’t get along. Ray always started a fight with Michelle. So spending time with Michelle, save for the studying and their shared school activities, was rare. Michelle and Carrie spent a lot of time writing to each other. Writing was the only form of privacy Carrie and Ray had. The sisters agreed to never read each other’s notes.

The guy with Michelle, Nick LaTroph, was Carrie’s big crush. She had a crush on him ever since she knew him. He was tall and lean with brown hair and emerald eyes. Nick and Carrie understood each other on every level. He also didn’t get along with Ray but tolerated her more than Michelle did. Carrie wished that he and Ray would get along more at least a little bit because she wanted to be his girlfriend and possible experiment some.

Ray also saw they come in together, Michelle gorgeous as always. Michelle could pass as Carrie’s sister for she had the long blonde hair. Sometimes, Ray felt strange because of how she looked at Michelle.

Ray loved the sleep over’s at Michelle’s house until one time, the last time. It was nothing for them to change in front of each other. While Carrie dressed them, Michelle undressed. Ray made the mistake of doing the once over, over her body. Michelle noticed and started calling her names. Carrie made up some excuse and that was the last time the sisters spent the night at Michelle’s.

Ray often felt that maybe Michelle and Carrie should have been attached because they were two peas in a pod. She saw her with Nick and knew something was up. Having no idea why Carrie liked Nick so much but she knew she did. For they shared the same heart and when Nick was round it raced. It also raced for Michelle but Carrie never said anything.

“Hi Michelle, Nick. I wasn’t expecting you guys,” Carrie greeted.

“I didn’t know you were working,” Michelle replied.

Ray removed the headphones.

“I picked up some extra hours.”

It became awkward, more than likely Carrie has never seen Michelle and Nick together.

“Okay, well what do you two want to drink?”

“Just coffee,” Nick ordered.

After they sat, Carrie and Ray went into the backroom for supplies.

“It’s weird you know. Your best friend and the guy you like.”

“Why? They just may be in a meeting or something,” Carrie said.

“Yeah, whatever. You said yourself that Michelle has been distracted lately, doesn’t write as much she used to. Gotta be a reason for that.”

“Come on Ray. You can’t be serious. Michelle is my best friend and knows I really like Nick. She would never.”

“All righty them Miss smarty pants, look out the door. She was shocked you were here. Michelle came alone to see you when you worked.”

“If it will shut you up,” Carrie submitted to Ray’s request.

“Yeah, it will. Anyway I don’t know what you see in Nick. He is such a pimply stiff.”

“Love is in the mind,” Carrie said.

“Love is where you feel it in the pants.”

“God Ray, you are so crude.”

“Just look out the door.” Ray opened the door enough so Carrie could peek Carrie’s smile dropped. Ray pushed the door open more. And there, Michelle and Nick were involved in some horny teenage sloppy French kiss.

Ray was infuriated. She took control of the body and Carrie let her. Tears fell from Carrie’s eyes. The girls lumbered out, startling the lip locked lovers. Ray mostly let Carrie have control but when someone hurt Carrie, Ray’s anger controlled.

“Michelle, why?” demanded Ray. “You are her best friend. You know she likes this guy even if he is a louse.” Michelle said nothing but turned and looked out the window. “And you Nick, I know you like my sister. You could’ve dated her and not her best friend. Anybody would’ve except for Michelle,” Ray continued.

“You wonder why Ray? I am dating Chelle because you and Carrie are one. No one can stand you. It’s a wonder Carrie does but I guess she has to. Someone dating Carrie would be dating you too,” Nick replied.

Carrie hung her head.

“This is bull shit, Nick. I don’t even bother you when you and Carrie are hanging out.”

“But you are still there.”

“Come on Ray, leave it alone,” Carrie told her sister.

“Carrie, this isn’t right.”

“Theresa, there is nothing we can do.”

Carrie regained control and asked the manager if they could leave. Soon, the girls were out in the warm sun.

“You wanna go to EJ’s?” asked Ray.

“Whatever,” Carrie mumbled.

Earl John, or EJ as he called himself, was one of the few mutual friends the girls had. He was a couple of years older than they at 20. EJ was tall and muscular but not protruding muscles with spiky brown hair and kaleidoscopic hazel eyes. Not only was he gorgeous, he loved Ray and Carrie and the girls had great fun when they were in his company.

Carrie fell in love with EJ when they first met. She believed he would be the perfect boyfriend for her and Ray since he liked them both. Then he dropped the bombshell, he was gay but Carrie secretly hoped he would discover he was at least bisexual. Even to this very day; before the Nick and Michelle thing, if EJ wanted her and Nick wanted her, she would choose EJ. Carrie knew she truly loved EJ.
