In Pursuit of Jack

Denise gathered the fresh-from the oven raspberry muffins and put them in her basket. The sun lay low in the horizon not fully awake casting a yellow glow over the rolling green landscape. She carried the basket in her mouth and walked to the palace to start her day as a friend/ hand maid to Princess Patty. Once at the palace a white German Shepard with his gold badge gleaming about his neck, a guard she never saw before stopped her at the entrance.

His eyes were blue like a day after the snow storm, “pass please.”

Denise dropped the basket with her hoof showed him her picture pass. She gazed over his strong hind quarters and groomed fur. His chest stood proud and attention. “You may go, Miss Denise.” she smiled, grabbed the basket and wiggled her curled tail as she went by, hoping he would notice her hams.

Princess Patty sat on her throne, wearing a white tutu, pink flesh hanging about and heavy red cape about her shoulders, she squealed when Denise entered with the basket of muffins.

“How many today, Denise?” she greedily asked

“Twelve the raspberry harvest has been plentiful,” Denise started, “mother wanted…”

“Who cares?” Princess Patty snorted, snatching the basket out of her mouth and stuffing two in her mouth. After swallowing, “how many times have I told you to walk upright?”

“You know I don’t like to, it is too uncomfortable and human like,” Denise argued.

“Do it,” Princess ordered. Denise rose to her hind quarters.

After Denise bathed and fed Princess Patty they retired to her bedroom to look at magazines. Denise looked up from Teen Pig and asked, “Patty do you know who the new guard dog is?”

“What guard dog, we’ve got so many?”

“The white one, in front of the palace doors.”

“Ohh that is Jack mother and father hired him the other day.”

“He is handsome, don’t you think?”

Princess Patty snorted, “oh for heaven’s sake, Denise he is a dog and you are pig. You should drool over someone like you.” Princess Patty tossed her edition of Teen Pig in front of Denise, “now there is a handsome pig, Denise.”

Denise looked over the cover of a smooth skinned lean pig, “he’s your cousin.”

“Second cousin, anyway I have already told father that he must marry me.”

“That is sick, Patty.”

She sneered, “what is sick is you liking a dog. A dog, lord he walks on 4 legs.”

Denise woke early and helped her mother bake extra muffins. She dressed in black tutu and slung a purple cape over her shoulders. Her mother fixed a purple ribbon on her head. Arriving at the palace a good half hour before Princess Patty awoke; Denise hoped Jack would be there. As she neared the palace, Jack took his place as guard.

“Good morning, Miss Denise,” he said staring into her eyes.

“Good morning. You are new here right?” she asked.

“Yes, Jack’s the name.”

“Would you like some raspberry muffins?”

He wagged his tail slow and method, “I love raspberry muffins.”

She laid the basket in front of him, “take what you want.” He ate two.

“Don’t you have to be attending Princess Patty?” he asked with red crumbs hanging off his white fur.

She looked at the clock tower, “not for another few minutes. Do you want another muffin?”

“Are you sure?” He took another and stowed it behind the door, “thanks for the muffins.”

Mustering bravery that she normally doesn’t have, “I don’t work on Sunday do you?”

“No.”

“Would you like to go on a picnic?”

“That would be nice since I just moved here,” he replied.

“How about me meet in the town square at noon.”

“Fine by me.”

She picked up the basket and started for the throne room, “see you tomorrow.”

The days leading up to Sunday were slow. Every morning she brought Jack muffins. They talked some and laughed some mostly about Princess Patty and her extra tenderloins. There was one thing she knew, she was falling in love with Jack. She imagined herself cuddling next to him on winter mornings by the fire. So what they couldn’t have children, the thought of being together made her happy. She would bake him muffins every morning. Denise longed for a kiss from him, a wet kiss all over her face. It didn’t matter that Jack was a dog. Princess Patty could have her cousin, she wanted nothing but Jack.

Rushing around the cottage to find all the goodies for the picnic, Denise panicked that she would not be good enough. She dressed in a white lacy skirt and a white cape. Would he think her to be beautiful? Grabbing the basket, her mother wished her luck and Denise strode to the town center.

Jack came into view and she saw him wag his tail. He carried the basket as they walked to a grove next to creek. Denise stayed close to him. They didn’t talk. Perhaps he was as nervous as she was. They chose a spot in the shade. She sat down on the grass still dewy and laid out the goods; Jack sat down beside her so close his fur rubbed against her leg.

“What do you think about pigs?” Denise blurted out.

“What do you mean” he asked, eating another muffin.

“In general what do you think about pigs?”

“Okay, I guess. I think most are slovenly but make a good treat.”

Denise whirled around, “what you agreed to come with me to eat me?”

“My old masters were humans and I have dined on pork before. I have no intention of eating you or any pig in the kingdom for that matter. Why do you care what I think about pigs?” he asked confused.

“Jack, I just like you so much. Princess Patty says it is shameful to in love with a dog. But she doesn’t know anything. She’s a dumb pig who wants to marry her cousin.”

“What is shameful is that Princess Patty is piggy pig. She eats more than she has to just because she can. Even if I still ate pork, I wouldn’t eat her because she is too fatty. Now you on the other hand, with your meaty pork chops and round hams you would be divine.”

She stared at him. What did that mean, did she incite a craving for pork because of they way she looked? Was he going to devour her right then and there?

“Denise it was a compliment. You are a beautiful pig and I would never eat you,” he nuzzled closer to her, “it is hard not to think of hams when you are wiggling them every time you walk past.” His fur tickled her cheek. “What do you say, Denise me and you against Princess Fatty?” he asked licking her cheek.

She smiled, “me and you against Princess Fatty.”
