The First Time I Went Across the GW Bridge

Posted on | July 16, 2008 |

Many years ago ( I would guess close to 17 or so) my parents loaded my brother and sisters up and we drove from Pennsylvania to the city that never sleeps. There are a lot of things to do in New York. On this particular trip we were going to the Bronx Zoo. Sure by this time I have to Philadelphia for several class trips to see American History stuff, the Liberty Bell and Declaration of Independence and the Franklin Institute. When I first saw Philly I was in awe but New York City can just take your breath away.

The skyscrapes make you feel like an insignificant ant, cars are packed together with yellow dots scattered about crawling to the traffic light. People of all varieties walked on the streets and shopped at fruit and news stands right on the sidewalk. I remember looking out the van window and I saw my first homeless person. He stood there in the shade wearing one of those hunting caps, he didn’t have a full beard but grey and white and stubble. His eye were dark and vacant and though his face plumpy it sagged with deep trenches. I never saw a homeless person before even in Philly where are all the tourist attractions were, never saw them. That image in my head stuck with me to this day. I was just a suburban kid who knew homeless people exsisted but never saw one. I watched him as we continued through the light, he stayed their motionless just looking across the sea of activity.
