Waiting for September

Autumnal smells
interjects itself on late summer days.
Golden sunshine comforting a
picked corn,
halos the ancestral trees.
Waiting for September.

Apples red and ready
for teacher still hang n
their leafy homes,
Waiting for September.

Windows flung open,
blackboards, desks glimmer
Fresh wax creeps across
squared floors,
Waiting for September.

Crisp new clothes,
perfect backpacks stocked with
pointed number two pencils, capped pens
and written paper sit
Waiting for September.

Get it all in, catch fireflies at dusk,
say hello to new things,
goodbye to old.
With trepidation and excitement
Waiting for September.
