Route Nine to Eastport

I’m sure my story would be a lot better if the boyfriend and I were on of those Boston tours because Boston is a beautiful city. I was there once with a friend and her mom and the only thing I did was chase pigeons in Fanuel Hall. Not terribly exciting I know.
This story starts in 2002 when my brother graduated from high school in Eastport,Maine. Neither the boyfriend and I have been to Eastport and we got directions from good old mapquest. We left PA at midnight and things were going good. At noon the next day we arrived in Hampton Beach in New Hampshire, we took a nap and met up with one of my old friend’s from New Hampshire. After dinner, we were rearing to go. Checking out from the hotel, we headed north. Maine is a beautiful state but traveling on I95 is just as boring as being on I80. Hell, we didn’t even see a moose and that was very disappointing to us.
Before Bangor, the boyfriend and I looked at a map and he wanted to take US 1 to Eastport and I said the directions say route 9. We took route 9 and this is where the adventure begins. Things were good on route 9 and then all of a sudden the road disappeared, at least a paved road. Thick forest surrounded us and there was a gravel road with huge holes in it. The broken road seemed to last forever (still no moose or even road kill moose. I know in PA roadkill deer litter the sides of the interstate) and if by magic a road appeared and were on our way. By noon we were in Eastport. The hotel I made reservations at looked like it stepped right out of Physco. We looked at each other and shook our heads.
We began looking for another hotel. We drove up and down US 1 looking for a place and the boyfriend thought he found a dilly of a place, right outside of Eastport. I went in and guess what there are vacancies. Of course there would be and the price was reasonable. We get a room. It just so happens our room is in a house trailer made into hotel rooms. The first thing we noticed was the overwhelming smell of moth balls, the next thing we noticed was there was no phone. Lucky for us there was a television but no channels to watch only snow. While I am in the bathroom, the boyfriend tried to plug in the lamp. He called to me.
I came out and he asked me to plug in the light when I reached down to the outlet, I felt that familiar sting of electricity from the basseboard heating, you touch anything in that area you got some juice. No way we grabbed our suitcase I managed to get our money back. Eventually we did find a place that was nice and you could see Canada out the door. Getting to Eastport was the adventure.
