Goodbye Baby
Posted on | October 1, 2008 |
It is dusk and a young couple walks together hand in hand. It is spring and the girl is wearing a smart dress and a letterman jacket.
Alma: What a wonderful night, I love spring.
Scotty: Our last spring in high school.
They sit on a bench and he nuzzles her neck, rubbing her arm.
Alma: Stop Scotty, I have to tell you something.
Scotty: trying harder oh come on baby, there’s no one here.
Alma: Really, Scott stop.
Scotty: Okay what is it?
Alma: I have the best news to tell you smiles and grabs his hand
Scotty: What is it?
Alma: We’re going to have a baby! Scott drops her hand and turns away. Pause What are you thinking, aren’t you happy?
Scotty: Pause for a few minutes If leave now we can be in Canada by morning.
Alma: squeals I knew you would have all the answers and when we are married then we can tell our parents the happy news.
Scotty: Marriage? No, Alma, we can get rid of the baby up there. I have some money saved it should cover it.
Alma: What do you mean, get rid of the baby?
Scotty: angry Don’t play dumb with me, Alma, you know exactly what I mean.
Alma: We can’t do that, we made this baby.
Scotty: We can’t have a baby it ruins everything. I had a plan for my life.
Alma: I thought you wanted a family.
Scotty: Yeah sure someday.
Alma: Well that someday will be a little sooner.
Scotty: It won’t work. Remember I worked so hard and now I have a football scholarship. Alma, my dream is to play football and go to college.
Alma: You can do all of that, Scotty the only difference is you will have a wife and child. We can find nice little home or apartment and you can go to school and play football. It will work out, I know it will. You’re just not thinking straight, Scotty
Scotty: No, it won’t, Alma. She tries to hug him but he pushes her away. Okay Alma, why don’t you tell your parents you are going on a trip for a little while then give birth at one of those nunneries and give the baby up.
Alma: My parents gave me up, I don’t want that for our child. She deserves a real family with a mom and dad.
Scotty stands and looks away from her.
Alma: I love you so much and I thought you loved me.
Scotty: You are a great girlfriend, you treat me like I am the best. But I am going to stick with the plan. I am going to college and play football. You never really fit in the plan anyway. What were you going to do for four years? Sit around at your parent’s house and wait?
Alma: I don’t fit into the plan? What if you break your leg freshman year and you could never play football again?! Then where would I fit? You’d come running back to me, a big old washed up loser. You told me you loved me, you told me people who love each other have sex. To me that meant you were going to marry me and raise a family. This is supposed to be the happiest night of our lives, where you would embrace me, lay me to the ground and make gentle love as you saying ‘I love you so much Mrs. Anderson.’ Why are you being this way?
Scotty: Make a choice, Alma and we will take care of the problem. You choose the baby and be shamed by everyone or you choose me, Alma and we get rid of the baby one way or another .And I will marry you when I am done with school because if you choose me, I know you will be devoted to me like you were. He looks at her. Where do your loyalties lie, Alma?
She sits on the bench, crying.
Scotty: When you make up you mind, you know where to find me. He walks away from her, off stage.
Lights fade.
